We ran into a school of kingfish but could not land a single one. The amberjacks were plentiful but it was when we stumbled on a school of Cobia when the fun began. Giant Cobia off Florida's Gulf: Catch Clean Cook
My buddy hooks a small stingray on a St. Croix Triumph salmon and steelhead rod and the thing snaps like twig. This is the second St. Croix rod I have broken in a week just fishing. Stingray snaps my rod
I’m still in the exploring stage in SW Florida. I decided that I need to spend some time looking for adventure in Everglades National Park so I reserved an island to myself and drove my skiff about 20 miles through a portion of the Everglades while fishing for snook, redfish and other saltwater flats fish and found my island. This video shows me camping through a two-hour thunderstorm on an island where there was no one else for maybe ten miles. The rain was a welcome addition as I did this while SW Florida was suffering though a long drought. In fact, a fire was burning more than 26,000 acres at Big Cypress National Preserve while I was there. Through my ability to draw bad weather by camping, I was singularly responsible for putting out this massive wildfire. I’m only half joking. Solo Camping and Fishing in the Everglades
I spent a week fishing with my childhood friends Tom and Joe in SW Florida or 26 degrees North Latitude. We fished offshore and inshore for six days straight. Joe’s biggest inshore fish was a 30” Redfish on a white paddle-tail jig. He had just snapped our second rod of the week on a stingray and had picked up a sabiki rig rod as his backup. He changed lures and immediately got hit by this 13-15lb Redfish. Thinking he had 10 lb test monofilament on he babysit the fish to the boat. 30" Redfish
While back at 46° North for a week during late winter and out to get my trout fishing fix. By the time I return in late May the big rivers near my home and the creeks will be blown out with flood waters so I’m out enjoying one last day chasing trout. In this video we show you where to look for trout in late winter in water just above the freezing mark. The day starts off below freezing but after a couple hours heavy winds from the south bring warmer temperatures and before my eyes the fish are found in different parts of the river. I’m also trying out a 30-year-old fly reel on a 6 weight nymphing rod. The reel belonged to my older brother who passed away in 2009 and this is the first time that I’ve had it out on a river. Catching 18-inch rainbows when nobody else is fishing
I’m back up at 46 degrees North for a week and wouldn’t you know it I need a few things that I left at my mountain cabin. Today, I am spending the day hiking into the cabin to retrieve some stuff and enjoying a snowy respite from Florida. Winter hike to mountain cabin
I recently switched to a traditional long bow for archery. I figured I couldn’t do much worse in my archery pursuits so let’s make it even tougher. Rather than buy a quiver to attach to my bow or a back mounted quiver, I thought I’d make mine with my leather kit. I’m always wearing either a day pack or a larger pack for elk and all of the packs I carry have water bottle storage compartments on the side. I crafted the leather quiver with the option to slide into the side storage unit, sling over my shoulder or to string on my belt. Leather crafting a traditional archery quiver
With the first offshore run of the year in the Gulf of Mexico my college buddy and usual offshore fishing partner, Dave ran 50 miles offshore with Captain Les in my Boston Whaler 330 Outrage. We were chasing King Mackerel on fly rods in 120’ of water and not doing great so we hit a known wreck in the area to see if we could chum-up a Cobia for dinner. Dave had a strong bite on a mid-weight spinning rod he was using to cast for Mackerel and a 30-minute tug-of-war ensued. Toward the end of the fight Dave was exhausted and done with the fight so I took over for the home stretch. I expected a Dusky Shark but what we landed was a five-foot-long amberjack approaching 100 pounds. Landing a giant Amberjack
On a recent trip to South America our team got into a few large Golden Dorado on the Parana’ River in Northern Argentina. The Parana is South America’s 2nd largest river and we were hosted by SET Fly Fishing. SET has operations in Patagonia for big trout and three (3) lodges on the Parana’ River hunting big Dorado. This video showcases three (3) boated fish. Golden Dorado are one of the most ferocious fighting fish in freshwater. Big Golden Dorado
John Herzer and his wife, Terri Raugland of Blackfoot River Outfitters out of Missoula, Montana got an opportunity to head down to Argentina to chase Golden Dorado with fly rods. The invite went out to several of us who have joined them on previous trips to exotic places but the turn-around was quick; 30 days. Eight of the usual suspects answered the bell. We were going to fish the Parana’ River in Northern Argentina, South America’s 2nd largest river and we were hosted by SET Fly Fishing. SET has operations in Patagonia for big trout and three (3) lodges on the Parana’ River hunting big Dorado. We visited two of the three lodges; Jetuu’ lodge and Itati lodge. Jetuu’ is a massive wetland and braided backwater of the Parana where we first fished. The lodge at Itati is on the main river and can see Golden Dorado of 30 lbs and up. SET Fly Fishing is the primary partner in the Golden Dorado Conservation Coalition and we took part in measuring and tagging many of the fish we boated. Relatively little is known about the life cycle of this elusive fish and it is the Coalition’s goal to establish baseline research to advance the understanding and conservation of this fierce South American Fish. To be honest, the team ran into what the guides called the worst week of fishing they ever had. Still be boated 27 of this rare predator fish including three (3) over 17 lbs. All in all, SET Fly Fishing served as incredible hosts and professional guides. Golden Dorado in Argentina
I build a lot of fly rods for friends and family. My nephew Drew needed a new creek rod to trample around the myriad of mountain streams in SW Colorado so I set him up with 3 weight rod I made from a MHx graphite rod. It’s small enough to snake through willows and alders one runs into in such areas and just tough enough to avoid tip breakage on most outings. Making a 3 wt fly rod
This fall I have chased elk, deer, pheasant, turkey and fished for trout in two states. I’ve been very busy with the channel since September and have yet to get out for ducks or geese. So my son-in-law and regular hunting partner kicked me in the pants at the end of the year and we got out for four days in SW Montana. Late December waterfowl hunting in the Northern Rockies can be sketchy. Though we were hunting at 5,000 feet we had a mild December. The biggest thing we had to deal with in December were crazy-strong winds. In fact, it drove us off a reservoir one day. We’re hunted a couple days on a mountain reservoir and a couple days in a snow covered wheat field. Generally, the action was great and early on our rusty shooting skills shown through but still managed to avoid being skunked any day. Late season waterfowl hunting
Join me for a start-to-finish craft build of a Damascus Steel skinning knife. I made this for my son-in-law who is an ultra-marathon runner. He runs marathons before breakfast and does 2 or 3 100-mile runs every year. His hobby is managing his five-acre wooded homesite. His yard is immaculate, putting mine to shame and I’m a landscape architect. He needs a cool knife, so enter Weezy Knives. I heat treated this knife in my mini forge and did the steel tempering in my wood burning stove at my 46 degree-north cabin in the Montana mountains. Making a Damascus Steel Knife
This summer I needed to take a walk. Well, more like an all-day hike. I decided to check out a remote river canyon that I hadn’t hiked in a decade. So, I packed a rod and lunch and some camera gear and headed out exploring and hiked five miles up a river trail. This video shows some of the beauty of SW Montana in late summer through a canyon still showing signs of a wildfire from fifteen years ago. Hiking in a remote canyon
Winter trout fishing is becoming more and more prevalent for local fly bums as our spring, summer and falls are getting more crowded with tourists. I consider myself both a local trout bum as well as a fly fishing tourist as I look further and further for new water. Most of my winter trout water is found somewhere in Montana and two flies are becoming more of a go-to pattern in late November and December; the San Juan worm trialed by a Zebra Midge. In this video, I will show you how I tie two of my favorite types of each pattern. I will tie the worm in a purple squirmy wormy pattern and a special Zebra Midge in a pattern I call the Murder Hornet Zebra Midge. This tandem pattern works well in different water clarity as well as different situations. From deep runs and holes to shallow water fast moving nymph drifts. I like to think that trout key in on worm in faded purple and may take the midge nymph as it is usually featured as a winter staple on the trout’s buffet table. The Murder Hornet pattern is black and gold. I could call it a bumble bee or a Missouri Tiger after that team that abandoned the Big 12 for a life of SEC mediocracy in 2012 but Murder Hornet sounds cooler. The gold wire band that forms the zebra pattern will flash on bright days in clear water enough to see this tiny fly to the naked eye. If you can see it, a trout surely can. Give the tandem pattern a try.
